Understand the Terrain

Lanzarote's landscape is dominated by volcanic rock, offering a mix of smooth roads and challenging climbs. The island’s terrain varies greatly, with coastal routes that are generally flat and mountainous areas that require more effort.

If you are like me, and like a challenge, the climb to Mirador del Río is particularly popular among cyclists for its breathtaking views but demands good preparation.

Best Times to Cycle

The ideal cycling months are October through April. The temperatures are mild, and there’s less wind. If cycling during the hotter months, ride early or late in the day to avoid the peak sun and always stay hydrated.

Prepare for Winds

The island’s winds, especially in the north, can be strong and unpredictable. Understanding wind patterns can make a significant difference to your ride. The prevailing winds are from the northeast, so plan your routes accordingly, starting your ride into the wind and finishing with a tailwind when you’re more fatigued.

Aero gear, such as a well-fitted helmet and clothing, can help reduce drag and make cycling against the wind more manageable.

Traffic and Road Conditions

Lanzarote’s roads are generally well-maintained, but they can be narrow, especially in rural areas. Traffic is usually light, but it’s essential to remain vigilant, particularly on the busier coastal roads.

Always follow local traffic laws, use hand signals when turning, and wear bright, visible clothing to ensure motorists can see you. It’s also advisable to carry a spare inner tube and basic repair tools, as bike shops can be sparse in some areas.
